The Golden Age of boys’ scholastic basketball became a cultural touchstone for two generations of scholastic Buckeye basketball fans in a colossal inaugural event at Ohio State University’s St. John Arena in 1957, climaxing the annual tournament heartbreak highway in dramatic fashion. The state basketball tournament project highlighting the history of the Ohio boys’ state basketball tournament, a Buckeye cultural touchstone ubiquitous to each Ohio county which hailed conquering heroes and the vanquished alike, was a 20th Century scholastic sports phenomenon and needed to be documented.
